Constitution and Bylaws

Preamble: Campus Unitarian Universalists affirm and promote:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  • Justice, Equality and Compassion in human relations;
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our organization;
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our organization and in society at large;
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all;
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Article I-Name

The name of the organization shall be the Campus Unitarian Universalists, herein referred to as CUU.

Article II-Objectives

The objective of the CUU is to be radically inclusive, spiritually alive, and justice centered. Our community honors profound mystery and celebrates life with inspirational worship and revolutionary ministry.  We welcome all who are charting their own spiritual path and want to engage in a free and responsible search for the truth.

Article III  Membership

  1. Any student at Southern Illinois University is eligible to be an active member and may hold office.
  2. Non-students may act as associate members, but may not vote or hold office.

Article IV Officers

The CUU will have the following officer positions: Convener (President), Records Keeper (Secretary/Treasurer) and Ballyhoo Artist (Vice President and Public Relations).

  • Election of Officers
    a. The Officers will be selected by a simple majority vote
    b. The Officers will be selected at the first official meeting of the fall semester and will be responsible for the position for one calendar year unless removed or otherwise unable to perform duties defined in the bylaws
    c. There is no term limit for service as an Officer, but all Officers must be current students officially recognized by the University.
  •  Removal of Officers
    a. Officers are subject to removal by the membership under any circumstances that the membership deems incongruent with the CUU's objective.
    b. Removal of Officers can be initiated at any meeting, however, a vote for removal cannot occur until a subsequent meeting which will be scheduled by the membership no sooner than the following day. This is intended to provide the membership a period for reflection on the matter prior to the removal of any Officer.
    c. The membership may, however, suspend any Officer immediately with a simple majority vote by quorum.
    d. Removal requires a 2/3-majority vote of those voting, a quorum being present and the attendance of the faculty advisor.

Article V – Not for profit Statement

This is a not-for-profit organization.

Article VI - Amendments

1) This constitution and by-laws may be amended by a 2/3-majority vote of those voting, a quorum being present.
2) Voting on amendments must be conducted after a minimum notice of 2 weeks.

Article VII – Financial Obligation

A majority of voting members of the CUU may determine reasonable dues and fees assessed to each member at the beginning of each semester.

Article VIII – Statement of Compliance with University/Campus Regulations

The CUU shall comply with all university and campus policies and regulations and local, state, and federal laws.

Article VIV – Robert’s Rules of Order

Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised, shall govern procedures not covered herein.

BYLAWS

I. Officers & Duties

            A. Convener (President)
                        1. Coordinate all activities of the CUU.
                        2. Liaison to University community.
                        3. Official representative of CUU.
                        4. Calls regular and special meetings.
                        5. Presides at meetings.
                        6. Prepares agenda for meetings.
            B. Ballyhoo Artist (Vice President and Public Relations)
                       1. Assumes duties of president, when necessary.
                       2. Assists president in coordinating activities.
                       3. Responsible for initiating and managing outreach and public                         relations
           C.  Records Keeper (Secretary/Treasurer)
                        1. Maintains accurate & current information of the CUU and                                    membership.
                        2. Assists president and vice-president to coordinate CUU
                        activities.
                        3. Keeps accurate minutes of each meeting and forward copies to                         other officers.
                        4. Keep attendance records for meetings.
                        5. Liaison to SIU for all purposes of organizational funding.
                        6. Maintains accurate and current account of all organizational                                funds.
                        7. Responsible for dispensing of funds in accordance with the
                         goals and programs established by CUU.

  II. Meetings

Meetings will be open to all CUU active and associate members, faculty, and Students. A notice of at least 1 week will be given prior to all meetings. The meetings are to be organized and controlled by officers and active members.
