Religious Education Mission Statement
The purpose of our religious education program is to provide a spiritual
foundation on which our young people can build their own faith. It emphasizes
the individual's need to continually search for truth, to have a reverence
for the life force and to respect the dignity of each person.
Specifically, our goals are to:
1. Teach the beliefs embodied in the seven principles and purposes
of Unitarian Universalism:
a. Each person is important and has value.
b. All people should be treated fairly and with
understanding.
c. Our Fellowship is a place where all people
are accepted and where we keep learning together.
d. Each person must be free to search for what
is true and right in life.
e. Everyone should have a say about the things
that concern them.
f. We should work for a peaceful, fair and free
world.
g. We should care for our planet earth and all
that is in it.
2. Expand knowledge of the sources from which Unitarian Universalism
draws its wisdom:
a. the words and deeds of men and women whose
lives are good models for how we want to live;
b. our Judeo-Christian heritage, which tells us
to love our neighbors as ourselves;
c. other world religions and cultures that inspire
us in our ethical and spiritual lives;
d. humanist teachings that guide us to listen
to common sense and the results of science;
e. direct experience of the mystery and wonder
that moves us; and
f. our Unitarian and Universalist heritage, which
tells us to open our minds to truth, our consciences to justice, and our
hearts to love.
3. Foster the development of basic values, derived from the
above principles and sources, that will guide our young people in making
ethical decisions.
4. Demonstrate a variety of ways in which our young people can become
informed, socially concerned individuals who are willing to act on their
principles and beliefs.
5. Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere in which everyone will feel
wanted, important and comfortable.
6. Help our young people feel that they are valued members and have
important connections to our Fellowship community and make adult members
aware of the importance of their continued involvement with the young
people.
