February 7 “You CAN Go Home Again: Finding Meaning in the Heart of My Former Faith” – Matt Sronkoski February 21 “Thich Nhat Hanh and Engaged Buddhism” – Kathy O’Laughlin Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, internationally known for his teachings and writings on mindfulness, and for his work related to "socially engaged Buddhism", a call to social action based on Buddhist principles. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize by the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1967 for his work in opposition to the war in Vietnam. Kathy will explore Thich Nhat Hanh's analysis of some of the major issues facing the world today, and his challenge to us to employ compassion in our response. Gillian Harrison will present "Please Call Me By My True Name", a poem written by Thich Nhat Hanh in 1967, in response to the plight of the boat people. Open Minds meets each Sunday at 8:45 AM in the Commons.Newcomers are always welcome. Many thanks also to Bob Camp and Bob Lembcke, who have dedicated many years of their time to keeping this program on-going and interesting, week after week. We look forward to a new energy and perspective that Terry will bring to this important program.
